How High Should You Hang a Pendant Light? (And How to Size It)

Hang a pendant light 30 to 36 inches above a dining table or kitchen island, measured from the tabletop to the bottom of the shade. In walkways and open areas, keep at least 7 feet of clearance under the fixture. Get these numbers right and the pendant becomes a focal point; get them wrong and it's either a head-bump hazard or floating so high it looks lost. Here's the full cheat sheet.

The hanging height rules, room by room

  • Dining table: 30-36 inches from tabletop to pendant bottom, centered over the table (not the room).

  • Kitchen island: same 30-36 inch rule, with multiple pendants spaced about 24-30 inches apart, measured center to center.

  • Bedside: hang 20-30 inches above the nightstand so the light pools over the bed without blocking your line of sight while sitting up.

  • Entry or stairway: bottom of the fixture at least 7 feet off the floor, or higher in a two-story entry.

  • The eye test: someone seated at the table should be able to see across to the person opposite without the pendant cutting the sightline.

How to size the pendant

For a single pendant over a table or island, a useful rule is a diameter roughly half to two-thirds the width of the surface below it. A 36-inch island can carry a 16-20 inch pendant, or two or three smaller ones in a row. Scale down for bedside and corners, where a petite glass pendant does the job without overwhelming the nightstand. If the room is tall or the ceiling is high, you can nudge the pendant up slightly and increase the diameter to keep it from feeling undersized.

Why glass shades earn their spot

Glass diffuses light in a way fabric and metal shades can't. Instead of a hard pool of light and a dark ceiling, a glass pendant throws a soft glow upward and sideways, which makes a dining nook or bedroom read as lit rather than merely illuminated. Petal and fluted glass shapes go further: the ribbing breaks up the light into gentle texture, so even a plain bulb looks considered.

A pendant isn't task lighting, it's the room's centerpiece — size it like jewelry, hang it like a pro, and dim it for dinner.

Our pick: the Blossom Petal Glass Pendant Light

Verdict

Measure first: 30-36 inches above the table, 7 feet of clearance in walkways, and a diameter about half the surface below. Then pick a glass shade that adds texture, like the Blossom Petal Glass Pendant Light, and you get lighting that looks designed rather than installed.
